Dear Yahoo!:
What does RSVP stand for?
Erica
Richland, Washington
Dear Erica:
Wanting to answer your query ASAP, we hustled on over to the Acronyms and Abbreviations category in the Yahoo! Directory. We checked out several sources and found that the meaning of those four little letters depends on context.

Stands4.com lists 31 different meanings for RSVP. Although the Acronym Finder offers just 14 interpretations, it does indicate that the most common meaning is the French "Repondez, s'il vous plait," which means "Respond, please."

So, if you're referring to the abbreviation at the bottom of an invitation, it just means to let the host or hostess know that you will (or will not) attend the big event. According to The Knot, the phrase is sometimes confused with "Regrets only," which means to reply only if you will not be attending.

If you're thinking of adding the letters to your own invitations, avoid the double courtesy of "Please RSVP." As Miss Manners points out, the "please" is redundant.
