The process of remastering a CD can mean a number of things, from simply re-recording the original stereo mix at a higher bit rate, to painstakingly reconstructing songs from individual instrument tracks. This fairly exhaustive and entertaining blog posting by Yahmdallah covers the basics of remastering. When a band records a song, it employs a number of separate tracks. These tracks are then "mixed down" or "mastered" into a final stereo mix for the album. Because analog albums were mastered specifically for vinyl records, they were light on the bass and heavy on the mid-range. Remastering usually entails picking apart this old stereo
mix, cleaning up the original instrument tracks, and balancing them for today's digital stereo equipment. For another excellent discussion of the topic, visit audio-forum.net. You can also find more details on the art of digital mastering at the Rec.Audio.Pro.
