Dear Yahoo!:
Is it true that Twinkies never expire or go bad?
Nikki
Sacramento, California
Dear Nikki:
It is definitely not true. Just ask good old Snopes. Twinkies have a shelf life of 25 days -- which is actually a pretty long time for baked goods. The reason? They don't contain any dairy products.

According to the official site Planet Twinkie, if you freeze them in a suitable plastic bag, they will keep for up to one month. If you'd like to learn more about America's favorite baked treat, check out this great FAQ.

Twinkie facts of note:

  • About 500 million Twinkies are baked every year.
  • Twinkies originally had banana filling -- the current vanilla comes from a banana shortage during World War II.
  • Their name was inspired by an advertisement for Twinkle Toe Shoes.
  • You can make fake sushi with them.
  • According to Hostess, it takes approximately 45 seconds to explode a Twinkie in a microwave. (Please, just take their word on this.)

Finally, we refer you to a remarkable web site called the Twinkies Project. Say what you will about Twinkies, but they're certainly durable food products.
