Dear Yahoo!:
Are the guests on the "Jerry Springer Show" real?
Ray

Dear Ray:
Sadly, evidence suggests that the majority of guests on the "Jerry Springer Show" are indeed real. However, actors have appeared in various guises in attempts to get publicity. According to About.com and several investigative TV specials, the aspiring thespians claimed some of the show's producers were complicit in the fraud. Say it ain't so!

Most of the guests may be "real," but what about their performances? More than a few claim they were coached extensively on the finer points of TV theatrics by the show's producers. After the Chicago City Council investigated the show in 1999 to determine if the show's trademark violence was real or staged, Mr. Springer decided to tone down the chair tossing. As a result, his ratings dipped somewhat.

In case you're considering trying out for the show, the official site offers a series of questions for potential guests: Are you a swinger? Are you a polygamist? Are you or is somebody you know a prostitute with a shocking story to tell? If not, don't bother calling.
