Tracking down the names of the committee members was like finding the leader of the Freemasons -- very difficult. Perhaps that's because every school from the Big East to the Big West thinks they deserve a shot in the tournament. And with 326 Division I teams and only 34 at-large spots (after subtracting the 31 automatic berths given to conference tournament champions), that leaves a lot more wallflowers than invitees to the Big Dance. According to Athlon Sports, the committee members this year are: However, committee member Floyd Kerr was replaced as AD of Southern University in February. At the time, Kerr said: "Since I won't be an athletic director, I won't be able to sit as a (committee) member." So it could be that only nine members voted this year. The NCAA attempts to include a spectrum of athletic directors and
conference commissioners on the committee, including at least one woman and representatives from at least three small to mid-major schools. The selection process is shrouded in complexity, with RPI (weighted this year to better reflect road record) and the "Nitty-Gritty Report" both used. But as objective as the NCAA tries to be, the process seems to be as much art as science.
