Dear Yahoo!:
Who are the real-life equivalents to the main characters on "The West Wing"?
Paul
Austin, Texas
Dear Paul:
The fictional West Wing has a lot fewer employees than the real one. In 2004, the Executive Office of the President listed over 400 people on the payroll. In its sixth season, the TV show had 10 main characters.

We'll presume you know who the current president and first lady of the United States are. Here are the rest of the major players:

Position Show Real Life
Chief of Staff C.J. Cregg
& Leo McGarry
Andrew H. Card, Jr.
Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman Joseph Hagin
& Karl Rove
Communications Director Toby Ziegler Nicolle Devenish
Press Secretary Toby Ziegler (filling in) Scott McClellan
National Security Advisor Kate Harper Stephen J. Hadley
VP's Chief of Staff Will Bailey Lewis "Scooter" Libby

Of course, not every character on the show translates directly to a real-life person. Assistants, it seems, are hard to pin down. We couldn't locate a real-life Donna Moss for either Deputy Chief of Staff. The closest we found was Susan Ralston, who was Rove's executive assistant during the 2004 campaign.

Charlie Young is another character whose role is not that straightforward off-screen. He started out as the president's personal aide -- Blake Gottesman does this for Bush. But now Young is an assistant to the Chief of Staff. Unfortunately, finding the names of staff assistants was tricky -- dozens of White House jobs have a general "assistant" title.
