There are several tutorials out there, but we found Jason Fogelson's article for Connected Guide to be the best. Mr. Fogelson is instructive but also realistic: if there is a CD version of your LP already available, just buy it and don't bother trying to transfer your music. In theory, recording an LP onto a CD is pretty straightforward: Connect your LP player to your computer via standard audio cables, and use any number of recording programs to make the conversion. But unless all of your equipment is top-notch (turntable, phono preamp, audio card), you're going to get mediocre results. For specifics on the process, start with Fogelson's eight-step tutorial. If your
turntable doesn't have a built-in preamp, you'll need to buy one to make sure the audio signal coming out is clean and level. You'll also need a stereo PC sound card. Fogelson recommends a number of solid preamps, sound cards, and sound programs. Most off-the-shelf audio programs should come with instructions for recording.
