Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I find translations of Chinese words or symbols?
Denise
Lancaster, California
Dear Denise:
Considering the Chinese language commonly uses between 3,000 and 6,000 symbols and has as many as 80,000, we're hard pressed to recommend a web site with translations of every Chinese word. But we did find a few useful sites about this complex language.

To learn about frequently used characters, check out the USC Chinese Language Program. Click the "alphabetic order" link in the center of the page, and a long list of characters will load in the left pane. Click on any character, and you'll get a page with a large image of the character, plus pronunciation tips.

If you want the Chinese character for a particular English word, try this Chinese symbols vocabulary collection. Click on a letter, then pick a word to see a large graphic of the Chinese character. Look up love, surf for silence, or page around 'til you find peace.

Want to understand more of the world's most commonly spoken language? Mandarin Tools has dictionaries, flashcards, and other reference tools for learning spoken and written Chinese.
