Initiating box office bomb sequence: 1. Misguided concept? Check. 2. Over-reliance on lead actor's star power? Check. 3. Faulty script attributed to a dozen or so hack writers? Check. These days, with foreign markets and the popularity of DVDs, it's actually pretty difficult for a film to lose money. And yet, somehow, against the odds, many movies find a way. Tracking down the biggest turkey was a tough task, especially since the box office figures can vary greatly based on whom you talk to (or in this case, which sites you visit). Disclaimers aside, it appears that this dubious honor
belongs to one Pluto Nash. Wait, who? Yeah, Pluto Nash. The Eddie Murphy "comedy" from a couple years ago cost somewhere between 90 and 100 million bucks and made a paltry $4.4 million. Perhaps we should have written today's column in red ink as tribute to the film's folly. Of course, Pluto isn't alone at the edge of the universe of cinematic clunkers. Many other films have exploded just as spectacularly on impact. Kevin Costner's The Postman? Lost in the mail. Final Fantasy: The
Spirits Within? Its crash landing bankrupted a studio. Oh, and Howard the Duck? The less said about that quacker, the better.
