Dear Yahoo!:
Who plays "Jack" in the Jack in the Box commercials?
Philip
San Antonio, Texas
Dear Philip:
Ronald McDonald isn't the only clown with a fast-food empire. "Jack" (or "Mr. Box" as he's professionally known) has been the grotesquely oversized face of Jack in the Box for years. Not only has he starred in countless commercials, his visage has graced antenna balls from coast to coast. But who is the man behind the mask? Join us for one of our more greasy investigations.

We first paid a visit to the restaurant's official site in hopes they'd credit the mysterious actor. Alas, like a guy who wants refills on his milkshake, we were met with disappointment. However, while there, we did learn Jack has his own parking space at corporate headquarters. This, despite the fact that he's a completely fictitious character. Cute.

Finally, after much searching and clicking, we stumbled on this article from the trade magazine Ad Week. Appropriately enough, it lists an actor named "Jack Tate" as the man who played Jack in a commercial that also starred such A-listers as Gary Coleman and William Hung. We're not sure if Mr. Tate was the man in the mask, the voiceover actor, or both. But we do know he's earned the right to park in Mr. Box's space should he ever stop by the office.

p.s. -- a reader of Ask Yahoo! recently wrote in and suggested "Jack" is played by a man named Dick Sittig. According to this article, Sittig hasn't confirmed the allegation. The mystery continues...
