Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, we don't know. And, as far as we can tell, nobody else seems to know either. But that hasn't stopped folks from speculating on the deeper meaning of Queen's chart-topping hit. A look at the lyrics provides a few clues. As the New York Times notes, many of the words are "fatalistic." Lines like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all," "nothing really matters," and "too late, my time has come," imply the song's author and composer, Freddie Mercury, was dealing with inner
demons. Despite the band's strict policy of not revealing the song's meaning, British DJ and entertainer Kenny Everett claimed to have heard an explanation from Mr. Mercury himself. According to this article from Blender Magazine, Everett claims Mercury told him the song's lyrics were just "random, rhyming nonsense." Seeing as Mr. Mercury passed away in 1991 and the surviving band members aren't talking, it seems we'll never know for sure. If we had to hazard a guess, though, we'd say the song is a type of fantasy written by a complex person and, like the best kinds of art, not intended to make perfect sense.
