Dear Yahoo!:
What steps has New Orleans taken to prepare for hurricane season?
Concerned
Dear Concerned:

It's been a year since Hurricane Katrina, and New Orleans still faces huge challenges. The city must continue to restore homes, jobs, safety, health facilities, and services (like water, electricity, telephone, and trash disposal). Of course, the Big Easy must also rebuild levees and deal with the impact of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and diminishing wetlands.

The Louisiana Recovery Authority has set up task forces throughout the state. Most notable of the LRA's initiatives is Louisiana Speaks, a "long-term community planning initiative" which involves parishes, neighborhoods, and individual homeowners and businesses. Although we're in the midst of the 2006 hurricane season, planning for the longer term and future hurricane seasons is always wise.

Perhaps the biggest lesson learned from Katrina and the ensuing flood is that it's best to be prepared for anything. In that spirit, Nola.com's Hurricane Center highlights news, maps, satellites, flood safety information, the newest evacuation guidelines, and a hurricane preparedness checklist (plus what to do during and after a hurricane).
