Dear Yahoo!:
How many people are running for president in 2008?
Debbie
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dear Debbie:
In a word, lots. Of course, most of these candidates will soon realize they haven't a snowball's chance in hell of winning. But until that bitter day arrives, here's the current list of everyone who has filed with the Federal Election Committee:

Democrats:

  1. Joseph Biden -- senator from Delaware
  2. Hillary Clinton -- senator from New York
  3. Christopher Dodd -- senator from Connecticut
  4. John Edwards -- former senator from North Carolina
  5. Mike Gravel -- former senator from Alaska
  6. Dennis Kucinich -- representative from Ohio
  7. Barack Obama -- senator from Illinois
  8. Bill Richardson -- governor of New Mexico
  9. Tom Vilsack -- governor of Iowa (since withdrawn)

Republicans:

  1. Samuel Brownback -- senator from Kansas
  2. Jim Gilmore -- former governor of Virginia
  3. Rudolph Giuliani -- former mayor of New York City
  4. Mike Huckabee -- former governor of Arkansas
  5. Duncan Hunter -- representative from California
  6. John McCain -- senator from Arizona
  7. Mitt Romney -- former governor of Massachusetts
  8. Tom Tancredo -- representative from Colorado
  9. Tommy Thompson -- former governor of Wisconsin and former Secretary of Health and Human Services

There are plenty of third-party candidates too. User-edited site Wikipedia lists all the "official and potential" candidates. Some of the better known possibilities include:

  1. Elaine Brown -- former Black Panther leader running for the Green Party nomination
  2. Doug Stanhope -- former host of Comedy Central's "The Man Show" running for the Libertarian nomination
  3. Michael Moriarty -- actor and former star of "Law and Order" running as an independent candidate
