Dear Yahoo!:
Why is the Nintendo Wii so hard to find?

Dear Tim:
For those of you who've been living under a rock, the Nintendo Wii is an extremely popular new video game system. Its apparent universal appeal sets it apart from its rivals. Thanks to its simplified gameplay (we mean that in a good way), it seems like everyone from little tykes to retirees wants one.

As a result, the Wii has been a huge hit for Nintendo. According to Yahoo! Games, it handily outsold both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the month of January. Good news for Nintendo -- bad news for gamers trying to track one down. Stores sell out quickly, leaving frustrated gamers little choice but to turn to eBay sharks, er, entrepreneurs charging a hefty premium.

So to answer your question, the Wii is hard to find because everybody wants one. Sorry if that's a bit anticlimactic, but it really is that simple. We've heard conspiracy theories that Nintendo is intentionally holding back the supply, but we doubt they're true.

We do have some good news, though. Yahoo! Games offers a Wii tracker that lets you know when stores get 'em in stock (though beware -- some stores sell only pricey "bundles"). If all else fails, you can try harassing a few store clerks. Beg them to tell you when the next shipment is coming in, and then line up early. It lacks dignity, but you'll probably be happy with the results.
