Dear Yahoo!:
How often should I replace my mattress?
Celine
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dear Celine:
Fact: It's impossible to listen to the radio for more than five minutes without hearing at least one mattress commercial. With so many ads saturating the air, you'd think average snoozers were replacing their mattresses every month. In reality, you can wait a bit longer.

It was a bit of a challenge to find a timetable from a site other than a mattress dealer. Fortunately, we managed to track down this entry from MSN Money. According to the author, a mattress should be replaced every seven years or so. Why? Simply put, mattresses "wear out over time." Not only do they begin to sag (affecting comfort), they also attract lots of nasty stuff like dirt, allergens, and dust.

If you're thinking of investing in a new mattress, you may want to look over this article from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. It lists lots of helpful hints including one in particular that, while obvious, bears repeating: Never pay retail. Never pay retail. Never pay retail...
