Noodling is the act of catching large fish (mostly catfish) with one's bare hands. It's difficult, dangerous, and, in some states, illegal. The urban legend experts at Snopes.com explain that there are laws against noodling (also known as "handfishing") in 11 states. Why? Well, from what we gather, noodlers sometimes pull up snakes and snapping turtles instead of fish. These sorts of mix-ups are common and can lead to nasty injuries, including the loss of fingers. So why do sportsmen risk their digits? Noodlers insist "there is great sportsmanship in
fishing with your bare hands." This article by Keith Sutton explains that, as strange as it sounds, there's a real thrill to sticking your hands in a dark and murky hole, hoping like hell you don't brush up against an ill-tempered snake. When it comes to thrills, we prefer roller coasters, but to each his own. Still, while we don't recommend such a dangerous hobby, we understand how the sport might appeal to some. After all, fishing with a pole is relaxing, but it can also be rather boring. Going in with your bare hands, though? That's anything but!
