Earth Day is over, but the fight against global warming continues. One of the best and simplest ways to have a positive effect on the environment is by pledging to go "carbon neutral." Whenever we use energy (turn on a light bulb, drive a car, etc.), we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That's not good, because CO2 is one of the leading causes of global warming. Unfortunately, for most folks, emitting some amount of CO2 is inevitable. That's where the idea of carbon offsets comes in. Essentially, going carbon neutral means you're offsetting the amount of carbon dioxide you put into the atmosphere. This can be accomplished in a number
of ways, including supporting alternative energy sources. TerraPass is a business that specializes in helping folks determine the amount of CO2 they emit. The company offers ways to offset that amount by investing your money in renewable energy. The renewable energy you support results in "verified reductions in greenhouse gas pollution ... these reductions counterbalance your own emissions." Other companies offer similar services, and while they're all generally a good thing, it's still best to use less energy. Remember, small changes can make a
big difference.
