Boy meets girl. They fall in love. They get engaged. Then, before you know it, you're spending $49.99 on a sterling silver melon baller. A nice gesture, but is that enough? The wedding etiquette experts at The Knot have covered this touchy topic. Their advice? Don't spend less than $50. For coworkers and distant relatives, aim to spend $50-$75. If the person getting married is a friend or relative, bump it up to the $75-$100 range. And if the bride or groom is a close friend or relative, they suggest spending $100-$150+. Of course, these are just guidelines, and what you spend on a gift shouldn't indicate your feelings for the person. Still, weddings are expensive affairs, and one of the ways they're made more tolerable is through thoughtful gifts from guests. A word of advice -- buy gifts listed on the couple's registry. They're on there for a reason. But even if you don't, just make sure to get something. There's nothing tackier than a guest who "forgets" to buy a wedding present. Remember: Even an overpriced melon baller is better than nothing.
