Dear Yahoo!:
Did Bob Woodward ever state whether or not he will reveal the identity of "Deep Throat"?

Dear Digging:
Our Watergate category features a fascinating site from WashingtonPost.com called Watergate 25. A special section devoted to Deep Throat sheds some light on the matter:
  • Only four people know the identity of Deep Throat: Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Ben Bradlee (former executive editor of The Washington Post), and Deep Throat himself.

  • Bob Woodward promised in 1972 to not reveal his source while he is alive, because he wishes to remain anonymous.

  • Deep Throat is one person (not a composite of several characters), he is a man, and he is still alive.

  • In 1972, Deep Throat was a smoker and was fond of Scotch.

  • As Woodward describes him, "He was, incongruously, an incurable gossip, careful to label rumor for what it was, but fascinated by it. ... He could be rowdy, drink too much, overreach. He was not good at concealing his feelings, hardly ideal for a man in his position."

A recent article from The New York Times Magazine suggests it may have been Mark Felt, who was the FBI's acting associate director in 1972. Felt, now 87, has denied it, but Bernstein has refused to comment.
