Dear Yahoo!:
How do I calculate my maximum heart rate for exercise?
Ken
Salt Lake City, Utah
Dear Ken:
According to the American Medical Association, your maximum heart rate is approximately 220 minus your age. Your target heart rate is generally between 50 and 75 percent of your maximum heart rate. This is your ideal heart rate to reach during aerobic exercise like brisk walking or jogging.

If you're not fond of calculators, check this handy chart for target heart rates by age group.

Try to exercise at least three times a week for at least a half an hour. Aerobic exercise sessions should last at least ten to twelve minutes to be productive.

We found all of this information on Just Move, a great exercise site from the AMA full of goodies for treadmill demons: fitness news, chat forums, and even an online exercise diary. The site received the coveted sunglasses in the Yahoo! Fitness category.

The statistics aren't pretty: 54% of Americans are overweight and only 10% follow a regular exercise program. So let's get going!
