Dear Yahoo!:
Who are some great jazz musicians?
Emily
Manchester, New Hampshire
Dear Emily:
Gosh, that's a bewildering question! Jazz encompasses a vast array of distinct styles and artists, from the big band swing of Tommy Dorsey, to the free jazz experimentation of Albert Ayler.

The Jazz category in Yahoo! is a good place to start. In particular, the WNUR-FM JazzWeb features lots of cool "style maps" and artist profiles. You may also be familiar with the Ken Burns documentary, which covers the giants in the field. But just for the heck of it, here are a few musicians we especially like:

  • Miles Davis -- The innovative trumpet player known for his spare style made one of the most acclaimed jazz albums of all time, Kind of Blue.

  • John Coltrane -- The unparalleled saxophonist is probably best known for his cover of "My Favorite Things."

  • Charles Mingus -- The wildly imaginative bassist and composer was the first jazz artist to have his papers admitted into the archives of the Library of Congress.

  • Bill Evans -- The "quiet revolutionary" pianist was heavily influenced by Ravel and Debussy.

  • Sarah Vaughan -- This acclaimed jazz singer was blessed with what one critic called a "titanic sonic presence."
