Dear Yahoo!:
Who said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate," and what movie was it in?
Victoria
Dear Victoria:
Here's an instance in which we knew part of the answer right off, but needed the Internet to find the complete answer. One of our all-time favorite movies just happens to be Cool Hand Luke, and the aforementioned line is one of our favorite lines from that classic film.

To figure out who uttered those memorable words, we headed to the incredibly useful Internet Movie Database. We typed the movie's title into the site's search box, and, in contrast to the film, the answer was communicated quite clearly.

The "Memorable Quotes" section provided the information we needed. The quote is attributed to "Captain, Road Prison 36," who was played by Strother Martin.

Here is the entire quote:

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you men.

The captain isn't the only one who utters the words. Later in the movie, the main character, Luke (Paul Newman), still cocky despite being cornered by prison guards, openly mocks the Captain with the famous line.

If you haven't seen the film, do yourself a favor and rent it tonight. We bet you'll love it, and if you don't, we'll eat 50 eggs.
