Dear Yahoo!:
Which celebrity has hosted Saturday Night Live the most times?
Erik
Vancouver, Washington
Dear Erik:
We searched on "Saturday Night Live guest host" and scanned the Saturday Night Live category in the Yahoo! Directory. We had your answer faster than you can say, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

Comedian Steve Martin has graced the boards of Studio 8H at NBC's Rockefeller Center building in New York City more than any other guest host. In fact, he's hosted the show so many times -- 13, to be exact -- that he's often mistaken for a cast member. When the show first aired in the late '70s, Martin was a regular fixture and appeared eight times before 1980. He performed stand-up comedy routines, created the recurring wild and crazy guy characters with Dan Aykroyd, insinuated the catch phrase "well, excuuuuuuuuuuse me!" into the American lexicon, and sung his novelty hit song "King Tut," all as SNL's guest host.

He's the only host to be featured solo in a "best of SNL" video compilation. Martin's official site summarizes his SNL moments as host, as well as his two cameo appearances on the show.

Wikipedia lists all the celebrities who have hosted SNL five times or more. In close second behind Martin is actor John Goodman, who hosted the show 12 times. Next comes comedian Buck Henry at 10, and then Alec Baldwin and comedian (and SNL alumni) Chevy Chase with 9 host appearances each. Tom Hanks, Danny DeVito, Elliot Gould, Candice Bergen, Bill Murray, and Christopher Walken round out the list of five-timers.

More SNL guest host trivia -- in addition to hosting a dozen times, John Goodman has made eight cameo appearances on the show, including a voice-over. Actress Drew Barrymore holds the record as the youngest person to ever host SNL. She appeared as host in 1982 when she was just seven years old. She hosted again in 1999. Only three former Beatles have ever appeared on the show (Lennon is the missing ex-Fab Four). And Gerald Ford is the only U.S. president to have been on the show. He didn't host, but he did say the famous "Live from New York ..." introduction in 1976.
