Dear Yahoo!:
What is the name of the little man with the suit and top hat from the game Monopoly?

Dear Real Estate Agent:

According to Hasbro's official Monopoly site, the iconic figure on the game box is simply called "Mr. Monopoly." But surfing around the Web for "Mr. Monopoly" turned up the little man's secret past. In a description of the General Mills Monopoly Cereal, we discovered that prior to the year 2000, this character was called Rich Uncle Pennybags.

Further searches on the old moniker showed that various Monopoly products have referred to the man in the suit and top hat as Rich Uncle Pennybags. The Monopoly Jr. game features a square on the board labeled, "Rich Uncle Pennybags' Loose Change," and the CD-ROM version of Monopoly has Rich Uncle Pennybags acting as an animated guide. Back in 1946, the character even had his own game titled, appropriately enough, Rich Uncle.

If you want to be formal, address him as "Mr." but his old pals still call him "Pennybags." Just don't take him to court for holding a monopoly.
