The name itself reveals the difference -- the crown prince will someday wear the ruler's crown. A prince is usually the son of a monarch, although a prince can rule a principality, such as Monaco. "Prince" is a pretty common royal title, but not all royal families have a "crown prince." Many European monarchies have special titles for the heir to the throne. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark is one of the few on the continent
with that title. In Arabic monarchies, the monarch may choose a crown prince later in life, or the family meets to pick an heir. The crown doesn't automatically pass to the eldest child. For example, the Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah of Brunei Darussalam is the third child of the previous Sultan. And Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia is the half brother of King Fahd.
